LavenderThe cultivation of lavender flowers started in the second half of 1800 in Liguria. Lavender was also imported from the French Region of Provence.The Ligurian Alps were covered of these precious blue bushes, whom flowers were cut, picked up and immediately distilled. At the beginning of the last century, ancestors of our family started with the intensive farming of lavender on the fields. Still nowadays our farm is tirelessly carrying on this activity. Cultivation, cutting and distillation is today carried out as hundred years ago, totally by hand and using old copper distillers. Properties and usesAromatic, purifying, antiseptic, balsamic, sedative, antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory are words that describe Laverder.Since the roman time the lavender was really appreciated for the numerous properties and uses. The latin meaning of lavender is “lavare” (ing.: to wash). This name is related with the habits of the Romans, who used a blend of lavender flowers and water as detergent, perfume and disinfectant. 1600 lavender was used to prevent plague. As a curiosity in 1600 some writers and doctors adviced to put lavender flowers under hat to prevent cold and headache. Lavender is today well-known for its traditional disinfectant, healing and anti-neuralgic properties. |
